Race format
We’re excited to introduce a new format of criterium racing in South Africa for the first time. Riders of the same ability will race together regardless of Age group.
This format is very exciting to watch and has taken off like wild fire in Australia and in the USA. Called Scratch Handicap racing, a rider is assigned; A, B, C, D, E handicap according to their abilities and qualifications. We’re working towards this and will launch this ahead of time next year’s event.
This year however we will group riders of similar strengths together, according to their age categories, each group will finish at the same time, as follows;
- RACE1: Junior Men & U16 Men
- RACE2: 40+ ,50+,60+ Veteran Men
- RACE3: Elite, Junior, Sub-Veteran, Veteran Ladies
- RACE4: Elite Men & Sub-Veteran Men
Prize allocation as follows:
- RACE1: Overall top 3, then 1st in each age group outside overall 3
- RACE2: Overall top 3, then 1st in each age group outside overall 3
- RACE3: Overall top 3, then 1st in each age group outside overall 3
- RACE4: Overall top 3, then 1st in each age group outside overall 3
- RACE5: Best Corporate team
- RACE6: Winner takes all!
Handicap Scratch:
- RACE1: Junior Men 15min Handicap, over u16 men
- RACE2: 40+ Veteran 30min Handicap, over 50+ men
- RACE2: 50+ Veteran 15min Handicap, over 60+ men
- RACE3: Elite Ladies 20min Handicap, over other ladies
- RACE4: Elite Men 30min Handicap, over sub-veteran men
Each race will come down to a battle between each of the groups within the race.
Each group will start approx. 1min ahead of the handicapped group already on the route, forcing the handicapped group to chase the group in front of them, in order to win.
If you are 2min behind the 1st handicapped group you will be pulled off.
The idea is to prevent a break away to occur and keep the racing fast paced till the finish, increasing a chance to have a sprint finish.
Rules:
- Riders have to report 30min before their assembly time to the assembly area.
- Assembly area will get locked 10min before the start; no additional riders will be added after this time.
- From the assembly area, riders will start within a minute after the 10min has expired.
- Start times may vary with up to 2min!
- If you are 2min behind the 1st handicapped group you will be pulled off.
