This very exclusive event limited to 200 entries will traverse diverse Big Five country, with the added thrill of game spotting while the adrenalin kicks into gear through a landscape which changes dramatically from lush bush veld to savannah plains and wetlands. In the heart of the African bush, in an exhilarating corner of the Waterberg, a new sporting and leisure complex is opening its magnificent new gates. The awe inspiring nine metre high gates at Legend Golf & Safari Resort open into a world where sport and wildlife live side by side. Legend Gorge a place where mountain passes and bush veld paths lead to Big 5 game encounters, a place where Legends are born.

Route Description 
The Route starts at the Gate House of The Legend Golf and Safari Resort on the 15000ha lower escarpment where the riders face the big five in the ever changing environment of dense bush, grass and wetlands. Next, the riders take on the 1000ft climb up Yellow Wood Gorge to the 7000ha upper escarpment approximately 5741ft above sea level. Meandering through the mini Serengeti Plains onto the edge of the craggy, sandstone Waterberg Cliffs, through the valley of pain, before riders take on the decent of the infamous Yellow Wood Gorge, dropping the 1000ft with up to 45 degrees angles back to the lower escarpment and making their way back to the Gate House of The Legend Golf and Safari Resort. Truly the stuff legends are made of! 
 
Information: 
The race will commence on the lower escarpment and although accommodation is offered at all Lodges on the Reserve, including those on upper escarpment, the riders staying at upper escarpment will have to re-route and drive around to lower escarpment on race day which is a 45 min. round trip that must be taken into consideration. 
ONLY the 70km race will go up the Gorge the 30km will be on lower escarpment only.
Entries will also be allowed on the day of the challenge. All routes will be marked and marshals will be placed at strategic points. 
 
WARNING! 
This event takes place in raw Africa, it's a wild place with many dangers and dangerous creatures. Strict measures will be taken to ensure cyclists’ safety and comfort during the race. There still remains a huge risk factor, you are ultimately aknowledging the risks and dangers involved by participating in the event.
  • All riders participate entirely at own risk
  • No vehicles except permit holders & game rangers are allowed on route
  • Failure to obey rules, regulations, marshals or Game rangers will result in immediate disqualification
  • All entrants need to sign an indemnity before participating
Timing 
Spectrum Sport Timing will do the timekeeping of all the events.
This is a SA Seeding event; please bring your SAS Board along. If you don’t yet have a SAS Number board with timing chips included they are available for sale online or at race registration for R35. These boards must be attached to the front of the bike. Cutting or damaging of number boards will lead to no results and possible disqualification. All number boards must be returned at the finish line.

The Area:
The ethos of Legend is to extract the spirit from its African surroundings and imprint it into everything that it offers.  Legend's flagship property, The Entabeni Conservancy is situated in the World Heritage "Waterberg Biosphere" of the Waterberg Mountain region of South Africa.
The conservancy, home to the Legend Big Five MTB Challenge is situated in the Limpopo province, between Naboomspruit & Potgietrus, a 2 HR drive from Pretoria by motorway. Entabeni, "The Place of the Mountain" is situated in 22000 ha malaria free big five game reserve and boasts five eco-systems. The upper escarpment offers majestic craggy rock formations and wide open grass plains. The 1900ft cliffs separates the lower escarpment from the upper escarpment and comprises of wet and savannah grasslands with approximately a three degree difference in temperature due to the vast height difference of two spectacular escarpments both with its own ecosystems. 
Five of sixteen lodges in the Legend portfolio are situated in the Safari Conservancy offering our guests an array of choices fitting their lifestyle.

Road Directions to Entabeni
 
Directions to Lowerer Escarpment: (registration)
Take the N1 North Highway form Pretoria to Polokwane (Pietersburg). Keep on the N1 through the Carousel and Kranskop Tollgates. Travel a further 32km on the N1. Take the Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) R101A offramp/exit (Route 289). Drive 8km to Mookgopong (Naboomspruit). Pass through the town of Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) on the R101A 29km) till you reach the Doorndraaidam/Sterkrivier turnoff (after the Entabeni sign). Turn left and continue 22km till you reach Haakdoring turnoff. Turn left and continue for a further 10km on a gravel road till you reach the big Entabeni Private Game Reserve sign on your right hand side and the security entrance gate. 
 
Directions to Upper Escarpment:
Take the N1 North Highway from Pretoria to Polokwane (Pietersburg). Keep on the N1 through the Carousel and Kranskop Tollgates. Travel a further 32km on the N1. Take the Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) R101A off ramp/exit (Route 289). Drive 8km to Mookgopon. Turn left at the second traffic light in town centre (R520) into Louis Trichardt Street. Continue on the R 520 for 11km until you reach a T-junction. Turn left and continue for 500m and turn right at Marken sign. Keep on the tar road for 24km. The road becomes a gravel road. Continue on this road for another 21.5km. 
You'll see an Entabeni Private Game Reserve sign on the right hand side. Turn right and drive 3.3km on a dirt road until you reach the security entrance gate.
